City Commission to hold Workshop
March 05, 2019
The Tallahassee City Commission will hold a workshop on Wednesday, March 6, at 1 p.m. in the City Commission Chambers, second floor, City Hall, 300 South Adams Street.
At the workshop, Commissioners will receive an update on efforts to establish a Purpose Built Communities (PBC) program for South City and the exploration of a City-owned fiber optic utility.
As part of efforts to increase the supply and development of affordable housing, the City has been working with PBC and community partners to implement the PBC model with the redevelopment of the Orange Avenue Apartments. The PBC model is designed to be implemented at the neighborhood level, and the redevelopment strategy focuses on three elements – quality mixed income housing; a high quality, cradle to college educational program; and a focus on community health and wellness. The next step in the implementation process is the creation of the “community quarterback” organization, which will be discussed during the March 6 workshop.
Earlier this year, the Commission asked staff to explore the possibility of a City-owned fiber optic utility. Information at the March 6 workshop will discuss the regulatory frameworks for municipal fiber optic systems, a local market overview for internet service, municipal operating models, Florida case studies and capital considerations.
The workshop agenda can be viewed at http://go.boarddocs.com/fla/talgov/Board.nsf/Public. The workshop is open to the public and will be aired live on WCOT (Comcast and CenturyLink channel 13) and streamed on Talgov.com and Facebook.com/COTNews.
