APGA Recognizes City of Tallahassee with its 2019 Public Gas Achievement Award
July 30, 2019
Today, the American Public Gas Association (APGA) presented the City of Tallahassee with its 2019 Public Gas Achievement Award. The Public Gas Achievement Award is the highest recognition that APGA awards to one deserving utility provider out of over 1,000 publicly-owned natural gas systems nationwide. The award underscores the City’s widely recognized exemplary performance and substantial contributions to the community. As an industry leader, the City’s willingness to exchange ideas and technology with others was also highlighted.
“Receiving the Public Gas Achievement Award is a testament to the men and women who dedicate themselves and work tirelessly to provide citizens with reliable natural gas services in Tallahassee and beyond,” City Manager Reese Goad said. “The City is proud to be an industry leader and operate the Best in the Nation Natural Gas Utility. This prestigious recognition is a credit to the leadership of the City Commission and the support received from the Tallahassee community.”
Last year, APGA presented the City with the Safety Management Excellence Award. This award was presented to the City for its consistent achievement in the field of safety management. The City’s Natural Gas Utility has been the only system nationwide to receive and maintain APGA’s Gold Level System Operational Achieving Recognition (SOAR) since the program’s inception, and the only utility to receive a perfect score. SOAR recognizes gas systems that excel in system integrity and improvement, as well as employee safety and workforce development.
“The City of Tallahassee’s natural gas system continues to be a model for natural gas systems across the country,” said Bert Kalisch, President and CEO of APGA. “They consistently provide safe, affordable, reliable natural gas to their community. APGA is pleased to honor City of Tallahassee once again, this time through the Public Gas System Achievement Award, which identifies one system that is widely recognized in the public gas industry, has made substantial contributions to the community, other utilities and the goals of APGA, and has expressed a willingness to exchange ideas and technology with others to ensure the gas industry will be the safest and most knowledgeable of all utilities.”
For more than 60 years, the City has provided clean, safe, economical and reliable natural gas to residents and businesses in a growing service area. Natural gas energy is safely provided through 920 miles of underground gas mains, serving over 31,000 customers in the Leon County, Gadsden County and Wakulla County areas. The highly-trained staff works around the clock to ensure the integrity and dependability of the distribution system and to assist customers with energy conservation and cost savings through natural gas use.
