City Service Changes for Fourth of July Holiday
June 25, 2020
As July 4 falls on a Saturday this year, the City of Tallahassee will observe the Independence Day holiday on Friday, July 3, with administrative offices closed. Below are City service schedule changes related to the holiday.
No Solid Waste Schedule Changes
There will be no changes to the collection schedule for residential yard waste, bulk item, garbage and recycling.
As a service reminder, all household garbage must be placed inside your City-issued garbage container with a closed lid for service; extra bags or waste left loose beside the container will not be picked up. Customers should place yard waste and bulk items at the curb and roll their garbage and recycling containers to the curb for pickup no later than 6:30 a.m. on their regular collection day. Containers should be returned to the home the day after collection. For more information, visit Talgov.com/YOU or call 850-891-4968.
StarMetro Schedule Changes
StarMetro, the City's mass transit system, will change its operations for the holiday. On Saturday, July 4, fixed routes will operate on a Sunday schedule with no night service, Dial-A-Ride will operate from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m., and the StarMetro call center will be staffed from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.
For more information, visit Talgov.com/StarMetro or call 850-891-5200.
Animal Services
The Animal Service Center will be open by appointment only on Friday, July 3, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and closed on Saturday, July 4. It will resume appointment-only service at 10 a.m. on Sunday, July 5.
City Animal Control will be available for emergency situations only on Friday, July 3, and can be reached via the Consolidated Dispatch Agency at 850-606-5800.
The day after July 4 can be one of the busiest days of the year for animal control officers and animal shelters due to pets that have strayed from home because they were frightened by fireworks and noisy festivities. To keep your pets safe, make sure they stay indoors at home during holiday celebrations. If you lose your pet during the holidays, call the animal shelter at 850-891-2950 and check the Found Animals page at Talgov.com/animals/asc-lostfound.
Here are some other July 4 pet safety tips:
- Never leave pets in a car while you enjoy summer activities. With only hot air to breathe inside the car, your pet can suffer serious health problems, even death, within minutes. Also, partially opened windows don't provide sufficient air but do offer the opportunity for your pet to be stolen.
- Keep your pet at home inside a sheltered, quiet area during holiday festivities. Leave a TV on to provide background noise.
- Never leave animals chained outside. A frightened animal can become entangled in a chain and get injured or break the chain and flee.
- Make sure your pet is wearing an ID tag and rabies tag, which is required by law. Having your animal microchipped is also an extremely effective means by which to identify them.
Service Changes Due to COVID-19
Due to COVID-19, City service changes continue to adjust following guidance from public health officials. This includes changes to operations at City-run community centers, Growth Management and more. For current information, visit Talgov.com.
