TPD’s Bloodhound, Jon Jon, Graduates from Training Program
October 21, 2020
The Tallahassee Police Department is proud to announce the graduation of K-9 Jon Jon. He successfully completed the Evidence K-9 program for Scent Discrimination.
Jon Jon has been training with his handlers since April, with approximately 90 hours of training time through both urban and wooded terrain. K-9 Jon Jon’s longest training trail was just over 2 miles long, and the trail was laid 39 hours before he ran it. This trail was in a heavily populated area, and he encountered 31 different people and dogs, which he dismissed, before locating his target.
As a Scent Discriminate K-9, Jon Jon can find missing adults and children based on their unique scent.
Jon Jon is named after Jonathan “Jon Jon” Hagans, who disappeared in the summer of 1968 at the age of 3 when visiting the beach in Jacksonville. His younger brother Joel Hagans is a member of the Tallahassee Board of Realtors and wanted to help TPD get a Scent K-9 to assist other families with missing loved ones. The Tallahassee Board of Realtors coordinated the formation of a nonprofit to sponsor the donation of the potentially lifesaving bloodhound to TPD.
Scent Evidence K9, a company that partners with law enforcement and community leaders to implement Scent Discriminate K-9 Trailing products and services across the United States, donated the K9 Handler Training and Certification for multiple TPD officers to ensure that there is always someone ready to respond to a missing person call with Scent Discriminate K-9 search resources.
With his certification in paw, K-9 Jon Jon is ready to do his part to save lives as a sworn member of the Tallahassee Police Department. Learn more about TPD at Talgov.com/Police or by following @TallyPD on social media.
