Applicants Sought for Citizens Police Review Board
Deadline to Apply is Nov. 16
October 26, 2020
The new Citizens Police Review Board (CPRB) was formally approved by the Tallahassee City Commission, and applications to serve on the board are now being accepted.
The purpose of the CPRB is to enhance trust between the community and TPD by demonstrating police credibility and responsiveness; ensuring citizen complaints are welcomed and taken seriously by the department; identifying trends of conduct departures from department policies and procedures; and increasing the public's knowledge about the complaint and investigation process of the department.
To apply, visit the board's website and complete the online form. The deadline to apply is 5 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 16. If you have questions regarding the application process, call the City Treasurer-Clerk's Office at 850-891-8130.
In total, the board will be comprised of nine members. Each member of the City Commission will appoint one individual to serve. The remaining four CPRB members will be appointed by the City Commission as a whole from the applications submitted with a letter of nomination by community-based civic and social service organizations.
Candidates must be a City of Tallahassee resident, property owner, principal in a business or nonprofit organization or utility customer who is at least 18 years old. They cannot be a City of Tallahassee employee, a relative of a Tallahassee Police Department (TPD) employee, previously employed by TPD, currently work for any law enforcement agency, hold political office, be campaigning for political office, have any pending criminal proceeding or have any prior felony conviction or adjudication withheld within the last three years.
The CPRB will serve as an advisory board to the City Commission, City Manager and Police Chief. Members will review, discuss and make recommendations regarding completed internal affairs reports involving use of force and other matters of importance or interest to the CPRB, the City or the Police Chief. During their three-year terms, members will participate in trainings and activities to increase cultural awareness and responsiveness, engage in training and other activities to learn about policing and review TPD policies and procedures.
