Tallahassee Police Launch Virtual Reality Training to Enhance Officer Preparedness
November 10, 2025
The Tallahassee Police Department (TPD) is proud to announce the implementation of a new virtual reality (VR) training system designed to strengthen officer preparedness and enhance community engagement. The new training is made possible through funding from the 2024 Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS) Grant awarded by the U.S. Department of Justice.
Using the wireless headsets and intuitive hand tracking technology, officers can engage in realistic, scenario-based exercises that replicate the complexities of real-life interactions including mental health crises, tactical decision-making, and community engagement.
"Investing in this technology reinforces our commitment to continuous improvement and community trust," said Chief Lawrence Revell. "Virtual reality training allows our officers to safely develop critical decision-making and communication skills in a realistic yet controlled environment. It is another step in ensuring we are delivering the highest standard of service to the citizens of Tallahassee."
TPD plans to integrate the VR system into training for new officers and annual training for current officers. Additionally, the department's Community Relations Unit will have the VR system on hand at the North Florida Fair, giving citizens the opportunity to experience the technology firsthand.
The integration of this system continues TPD's long-standing efforts to embrace innovation and reinforce the department's guiding principle: Here for You.
