Partnership Provides New Homes
City Builds Two More Habitat for Humanity Homes for Local Families
June 25, 2021
With heart and sweat, City of Tallahassee employees have built two more homes for local families in partnership with Habitat for Humanity. Leaders with both organizations will officially present keys to the new homeowners at a special ceremony on Monday, June 28, at 9:30 a.m. on Eddie Street.
Construction of the homes began about a month apart in December 2020 and January 2021. City employees volunteered more than 200 hours of their own time to complete the builds. From framing the home to laying sod, volunteers participated in every stage of construction.
“Every family deserves a safe, affordable, stable home, which is what the City’s partnership with Big Bend Habitat for Humanity helps provide,” Mayor John Dailey said. “Volunteering their time, City employees poured their hearts into making the dream of homeownership a reality for these two families. This is yet another way that we are helping to expand affordable housing options in our community.”
Earlier this summer, the City Commission voted to sponsor the construction of another three Habitat for Humanity homes, in the form of financial support in the amount of $195,000 and volunteered manpower provided by City of Tallahassee employees. In line with its five-year strategic plan, this brings the total number of homes sponsored through this partnership to 14 since 2017.
Big Bend Habitat for Humanity provides affordable homeownership to low-income persons. The Habitat for Humanity model allows for groups and individuals to sponsor homes through financial contributions and pledges of volunteer labor. Individuals who acquire a home through Habitat for Humanity must in turn provide volunteer labor for other homes built by the organization.
This partnership is one of the City’s many affordable housing initiatives. For more information about Big Bend Habitat for Humanity, visit BigBendHabitat.org. To learn more about the City’s commitment to affordable housing, visit Talgov.com.
